Choosing Patio Tilt Umbrella
Patio umbrellas are designed for shading different types of areas. It depends on whether you want the umbrella to fit through a table, off to the side, or an offset patio umbrella so that you can get maximum table area. So,the first thing to look at is how much space you have for the umbrella.
A small area like a balcony or small patio limits the size of the umbrella. Larger patios, can of course, take more sizing options. The size will further determine how many options are available.
Determine first the area that needs to be covered. Measure the length and width of the shade area. Allow about 6 to 8 inches around the umbrella for clearance, so that the patio umbrella can be opened and closed without obstruction.
Next, determine what needs to be covered? Is it a table or just a shade area?
The smaller umbrellas, like the 7 foot patio umbrellas will suit café and bistro table sets. The standard umbrellas, like the 9 foot patio umbrellas are best suited for covering dining sets or chaise lounges. Large ones like the 11 foot patio umbrellas work best for covering larger oval table, mixed seating areas, and also poolside areas or sitting lounge areas.
The umbrella can also be freestanding or go through the table. The free standing ones will need the right umbrella base, which is also called umbrella stand. Be careful if buying umbrellas that fit through the table. The pole diameter must be able to fit into the frame holes of the table.

Patio Umbrella Terms
Here are some terms used for patio umbrellas that you may find useful.
The Crank: Is a device that needs to be rotated to open the umbrella. The basic aluminum style either has a manual push open lift or a rope pulley system to lift the shade canopy open. There are some umbrellas that have the tilt-mechanism incorporated together with the crank feature to make it easy to also tilt the unit.
Pulley & Pin: Many aluminum umbrellas have cranks as a mechanism to raise and lower the unit. Most of the wood styles have a push up mechanism or pulley & pin type of feature to raise it to the proper height.
The Finial: Adds decorative functionality to the shade structure, providing the finishing touch to the aesthetics of the top. It also has a functional purpose, anchoring the top of the shade cover fabric to the frame.
The Pole: Most poles are assembled in two pieces to make it easy for shipping and storage. Wood and aluminum are the common materials used, but there are those made of fiberglass, steel, plastic or resin composite types. Some of the commercial grade solid pole types are in a single piece which adds considerable strength so that they can better withstand wind pressure and the rigors of outdoor commercial applications like around hotel & apartment pool areas.
The Ribs: The rib arms are the pieces of the frame that spread and support the shade cover into the open position. More ribs means more strength and stability.
Tilt Mechanisms: There are different tilt mechanisms to provide additional shade options for outdoor sun protection. These include buttons at the top portion of the umbrella underneath the rib arm hub, or crank feature tilts in conjunction with the crank handle.
